Smaller Learning Communities

The SLCs at Newport Harbor High School encourage students to explore areas of personal interest within the curriculum. Teachers integrate studies with cross-curricular projects. An important goal of the program is to create a small school environment on a campus that includes more than 2,000 students. Summer activities, social events and field trips give teachers and students opportunities to interact in an informal atmosphere. Parent support is an important component of the experience.

Junior Mentoring

A program that gives all juniors contact with community professionals in a field that interests them and that they want to explore as a possible option for their future. Students have lunch meetings with these volunteer mentors on campus during regular lunch period six times during the school year. In addition to the lunch meetings, the students will be offered career experience or job shadow opportunities with their mentors twice during the year. For successful completion of the mentor program, the student can earn 2.5 credits toward graduation. The mentor program provides the basis for the student’s senior exit project, which is a graduation requirement.

Students meet in one of four groups. Within the groups are several career clusters depending on the interests of the student.

Our mentor coordinators have searched the community for the generous volunteers, many of whom are parents of Harbor students, who are excited to share their professional experience with your students. If you or someone you know would like to become a mentor, please call Diana Long at 515-6365.
