STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The main goal of the Rembrandt Academy is to provide a smaller "family" environment for students who may find a school as large as Newport Harbor intimidating. Students spend a good part of their day in classes with the same 120 students. They go on field trips, complete numerous team projects, and have social activities together. This gives students a chance to form friendships and feel comfortable with the smaller group. At the same time they share the same teachers, who also get to know these students better. With the Rembrandt team of teachers focusing on our 120 students, it is less likely that one will "fall through the cracks." But Rembrandt is not an exclusive club. There are plenty of opportunities, such as athletics, non-Rembrandt classes, clubs, etc to meet and make friends with students not in this particular academy. But the Rembrandt community is always there as a "home" to feel comfortable with.
The Rembrandt Academy is a college-prep program integrating science, English, history, and the arts. It's purpose is provide quality education, and to prepare students for entrance to the best colleges in the country by offering demanding, college-prep classes. At the same time Rembrandt encourages its students to look outside the scope of individual classes and see "the big picture," to see the relationships existing between the various disciplines. To accomplish this students complete numerous "integrated" projects, working alone or in teams, which ask students to see the connection between the arts, science, math, history, and literature. Not all students choose college, but all will be encouraged to reach their highest levels of educational potential.
The theme of Rembrandt is the arts, both visual and performing. We believe that a truly educated person understands and appreciates the arts. Students are encouraged to tap into their creative side and "expand their minds" to become more integrated human beings. Students are introduced to all the arts' disciplines available on campus, and encouraged to pursue one or more in more depth in future years.
