STAR TEST 2008

Next week on April 29, our school kicks off STAR testing. The California STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) program is comprised of CSTs (California Standards Tests) given to all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders which are based on the state's standards-what students are supposed to know and be able to do in each core subject area of English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. CST scores indicate how well a student has mastered the state's academic content standards. Because of the enormous weight this test carries on our API (Academic Performance Index), the importance of this test cannot be overstated. The API is the benchmark used to compare achievement at all California schools. We have set of collective goal of achieving an API of 800 this year. Last year our score was 782 and we did not feel it was a true reflection on the capability of our students. Our teachers have been working extremely hard all year to prepare students for the test through a focus on the standards. Staff and ASB have been working together to inspire maximum effort for next week and we are proud of their efforts. We encourage our parents to do the same.

New Robins Hall Becomes More Concrete

Summer is fast approaching and so is the foundation for the Robins/Loats buildings. A massive project, the foundations will be several times larger than the original footings. The increased size, depth, and quantity of rebar supports being installed, begin to show the tremendous changes in construction requirements for our next 75 years of use of the Robins/Loats complex. As the weather holds for the construction company, they expect to have the foundations completed shortly and begin moving on to the next stages of plumbing and electrical work for the structures.

Please see current progress on Robins-Loats Reconstruction for more information.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” a Musical

The Theatre Arts Department is proud to present the adorable, family-friendly musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and children. Performances will be held in the Lyceum Theatre at Costa Mesa High School Wednesday through Saturday January 16, 17, 18, and 19, at 7:00 p.m. with a Saturday Matinee, January 19 at 1:00 p.m.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love—a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the workforce. Millie soon begins to take delight in the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a white slavery ring in China. Through a series of comic mishaps, Millie Dillmount finds true love, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Don’t miss seeing our talented NHHS Drama students in this delightful song and dance extravaganza which will leave you tapping your toes and humming some of the best music heard on Broadway in this decade. The original production of the comic pastiche, directed by Michael Mayer, underwent several workshops in New York and performances at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego before ultimately opening on Broadway on April 15, 2002. The Broadway production subsequently won six 2002 Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Tony Award-winning musical with music by Jeanine Terori, lyrics by Dick Scanlan, and a book by Richard Morris and Scanlan is based on the 1967 film of the same name.

The Lyceum Theatre at Costa Mesa High School is located at 2650 Fairview Street in Costa Mesa. The theatre is located directly in front of the front parking lot of the school and additional parking is available in the back lot by the main gym.

ACTION BRINGS CHANGE!

The NHHS Young Democrats Club is proud to kick off its 2nd semester project! Taking a Democratic stand and focusing on local and global issues, we are committed to bringing an end to HIV and AIDS in the US and around the world.

Collaborating with The Student Global AIDS Campaign, we hope to educate our peers, staff, parents and general public about this worldwide problem via lectures, literature, the media, etc. It is part of our goal to mobilize students in particular, to bring the global needs directly to decision makers in government, and big business. The ultimate goal is to secure “Universal Access to AIDS treatment and to put an end to AIDS.” Petitions will be available for students and staff to sign to send in order to help pass key legislation on AIDS orphans, as well as to successfully push drug companies to cut their prices and allow low-cost generic production of AIDS drugs! Help us as well, to secure donations and contributions to World Vision make a difference, now! All monies raised by our efforts will be directed the World Vision organization to support young children in Africa who either suffer from HIV/AIDS or who are AIDS orphans.

It is our hope that everyone will be touched by what they’ve learned and will be motivated to take action! There are several ways in which to help. Stay in touch with our weeklong ABC Campaign, ACTION BRINGS CHANGE !

Listen for announcements on how you can make a difference, but most of all please contribute! Please take part in our RUBY’S fundraiser, Wed., February 28th. Fliers will be distributed in classes and available in the administration office. Chipotle and Jamba Juice will be available at lunch on Friday, March 2nd in the quad (100% of profit goes to World Vision). Dankie!

Dankie! Thank you! Last spring many of you donated school supplies for children living at an orphanage in Rehoboth, Namibia. Miss Kirby traveled with a team of people, to not only deliver these supplies, but to spend time helping at this orphanage and the surrounding community. This community is heavily afflicted by AIDS and unemployment. The school supplies were a big hit! The children were excited to not only receive crayons, colored pencils, and markers, but also something as simple as binder paper. Thank you for helping brighten the lives of these children! If you have questions about how you can continue to help these young children please contact Miss Kirby at kkirby@nmusd.us. Please check out some of the pictures taken on the trip.

13th Annual Student Holiday Breakfast

Dear Friends, Parents, Supporters, Staff, Administrators, Students, and Family Members:

It is that time of the year when we gather together and share the Holiday Spirit with the ones we love. The 13th Annual Student Holiday Breakfast is one such gathering to begin building that Holiday feeling.

Featuring the award winning capabilities of the Culinary Arts program with a breakfast buffet and the uncompromising talents of the Performing Arts program with a short from Merrily We Roll Along, the Annual Breakfast is an opportunity to support the students in these programs with the necessary experience and funds to broaden their education.

Please join us at the breakfast (SEE THE FLYER) and show your support for these students. Post the flyers in your class rooms and hand them out to students to invite their family members. (Alumni/Alumna are encouraged to attend too!) If you cannot attend, please send a contribution to the Foundation Office and sponsor a student or deserving family to attend the breakfast.

Save the date (June 14th) for the End-of-the-Year Breakfast at St Andrews when we feature the Culinary Arts one last time and celebrate the achievements of the "Top 15" academic students for the year. (As identified by the counseling staff)

Sincerely,

Richard Riva, Navigator President

Robins Hall to be Constructed

Dear Harbor High Community:

We have some great news to share regarding the reconstruction of our beloved Robins-Loats Hall. For those of you unfamiliar, Robins-Loats was closed approximately 3 years ago due to seismic safety concerns. This building held not only our landmark bell tower, but also housed our library, science department, theater, drama department, music department, food services, historical museum (Heritage Hall) and administration.

You can see a rendering of the new building, which is scheduled to begin construction in summer 2007. The architects stayed true to the original façade in the design of the new building, with the interior dramatically improved in function.

In a recent student interview, Tim Marsh, the district’s Executive Director of Maintenance and Operations, addressed questions regarding the reconstruction project:

  1. How much money is it going to take to completely renovate Robins Hall? The budget for the construction is $35 million dollars.
  2. How much of the money spent on reopening Robins Hall was given to us by Measure A and Measure F? The Measure A contribution is $2.7 million. That is equal to the amount of funds it would have taken to make the existing building meet the design criteria of Measure A. The Measure F contribution is $35 Million.
  3. When will the construction process begin? There will be work this school year to remove some utilities that serve other buildings such as the boilers from the basement of the building. The construction of on Robins-Loats should begin on the first day of summer of 2007.
  4. When will Robins officially open for classes again? The construction schedule will be set after the contractor is on board. However the estimated construction period is 20 months.
  5. What are some new things featured in the new plan that were not in Robins Hall before? The utilities in the building will be able to support modern teaching technology, such as computers in class rooms, a new library and science labs. The building will meet the modern earthquake codes and meet modern accessibility codes.
  6. Is there anything special about the process, or the plan, that you would like the students and teachers to know about? There has been great effort to have the new facility emulate many of the architectural features of the existing structure while still meeting modern codes.

Michael Vossen

Principal/Newport Harbor High School

We Took Home the Gold……………..AGAIN!

Congratulations to Newport Harbor High’s Culinary Team; Beau Harris, Colin Meatzie, Brian Macha and Chris Hernandez. They won the state championship on Saturday, March 13th at the California Restaurant Association’s 4th Annual Culinary Competition. This year’s competition was held at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in the Napa Valley. Newport placed second in the management competition with our team consisting of Catherine DuPont, Colin Meatzie, Beau Harris and Matt Gamble. Teams participating in the management competition demonstrated their knowledge of the restaurant and foodservice industry by competing in two different events. In the case study, students have to demonstrate their ability to solve a variety of real-world scenarios. The second portion of the competition was a “Jeopardy” style question and answer event.

They competed against schools from all over the state and will now represent California in the National Competition in Charlotte, North Carolina at the end of this month. The culinary team was given 1 hour to prepare a 3 course, gourmet meal using only 2 butane burners and no electrical appliances. Under the direction of Culinary Arts Director Janet Dukes and volunteers Minnie Ballard and Hennie Sondel, and their coach, Chef Jeffrey Riggs, the Executive Chef at the Pacific Club, the team was judged by internationally famous chefs not only on the meal’s presentation and taste, but also on technical skills, teamwork, and knowledge of safety and sanitation. During the judge’s review, the judges commented on how impressed they had been with our team’s performance, skills and professionalism, and that they were the “standard” by which other teams were judged. It was a proud moment – for the team, the school, and everyone who cares about this program. The many months of intense preparation were worth every minute.

This year’s menu, created by the team and their coach consisted of a Warm Poached Lobster and Artichoke Salad with Crispy Leeks, Drizzled with a Truffle Vinaigrette. The main course was Pan Roasted Rack of Lamb, Spinach and Lentil Timbale, topped with Garlic and Thyme Scented Baby Tomatoes. Their dessert was a definite showstopper - Chocolate Batons, consisting of a Grand Marnier-Mascarpone Mousse encased in a chocolate lattice, finished with a Fresh Raspberry Coulis.

In 2004, the teams came in 1st in Culinary and 2nd in management.

Congratulations team and good luck on your trip to North Carolina. You make us all very proud!

FREE HEART SCREENS!!!

Free Heart Screens will be taking place on June 4th from 8-2pm in the Girl’s Gym. These tests will be given by 20 professional doctors from the area and will only take 5-10minutes!! Heart Screens help to prevent undetected heart conditions that are harmful to everyone. These screenings will check your heart to see if there are any current or possible heart conditions. Heart conditions can be undetected because they don’t show any conditions and are very dangerous. There have been many people who have been affected by heart conditions. Even worse, there are many people who have heart conditions and have no IDEA! Student athletes especially need to take these tests serious. If tests like these are not taken to the heart then you may be seriously affected. In addition, these tests will be a district wide event that supports the cause of being Healthy? So PLEASE take 5-10 minutes out of your busy life to ensure that you can be healthy for your FUTURE LIFE!

STAR Testing Schedule

We will be administering the California STAR (Standards Testing and Reporting) test to all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders on April 26, 27 and 28. The STAR is now a completely standards-based test which measures student performance on the California content standards in Language Arts, Science, Social Science and Mathematics. Simply put, this test measures how well our students know the content standards and how well our school measures up to others in California. Because of the enormous weight this test carries on our API (Academic Performance Index), the importance of this test cannot be understated. It is critical that every student attend and do his/her very best on the test.

One of the challenges in scheduling this test is the uneven amount of testing time between grade levels. We have created the same start times for all students; however, release times vary slightly with each grade. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be minimum day schedules to allow the students to focus on the tests. If you have any questions, please contact Brook Bargas from our front office. Please read the following schedule and notes for the week of April 25-29 carefully:

Monday, April 25 Regular traditional schedule. School begins at 7:45am. Zero period classes held.
Tuesday, April 26STAR TESTING. School begins at 8:00am.
Wednesday, April 27STAR TESTING. School begins at 8:00am
Thursday, April 28STAR TESTING. School begins at 8:00am.
Friday, April 29Regular traditional schedule. School begins at 7:45am. Zero period classes held.

Seniors: For our seniors, a special schedule for April 26/27/28 will be distributed through their English teachers which will provide them opportunities to complete their senior requirements. Please visit the senior class schedule for more information.

We are looking forward to a successful STAR test. We appreciate your assistance in stressing the importance of this exam to your student. If you have questions regarding the test schedule, please contact our office at 515-6300 or check our website. If you want more information about STAR, call us or go to the STAR website at star.cde.ca.gov

International Ambassadors Club

The NHHS International Ambassadors Club is busy preparing for Unity Month, which is the month of November at our school. The purpose of Unity Month is to promote cultural understanding and mutual respect on our campus. During the month we honor the various cultures represented by our diverse student body. We will start the month with a carne asada taco sale at lunch. Students will get an opportunity to savor genuine Mexican-style carne asada tacos. In the following weeks we sponsor such lunch-time events as International Food Day, a talent show, an essay writing contest, ethnic dances, and other activities. The month culminates in our all-school assembly. This year we are honored to have as our guest speaker the renowned Dr. Eyrlene Piper-Mandy, who will speak to the students about racial stereotyping. Dr Mandy has spoken at school assemblies several times in the past, and she always has a profound effect.

This year’s president of the Ambassadors Club is Melissa Chinn, ably assisted by officers Connor Gerson, Brittany Cluck, Jill Casserly, Lauren Smith, Casey Powell, Tom Harrington, and Kevin Geehr.

Red Ribbon Week! (Oct. 25th - Oct. 29th)

Did you know that nearly two-thirds of all American teenagers try an illegal drug before they finish high school? This is definitely a shocking statistic and it can bear many negative results on a student’s success in high school and beyond. So, the purpose of Red Ribbon Week (October 25th – 29th) is to promote a healthy and drug-free campus here at Newport Harbor High School.

There are many exciting anti-drug activities scheduled for the last week of October including:

1. The Annual Door Decorating Contest! = Every third period class should create an original poster to display their anti-drug sentiments. The posters will be judged on Wednesday, October 27th and the winning class will receive an ICE CREAM PARTY on Friday!

2. Special Guest Speaker = On Tuesday, October 26th NHHS will be hosting Jay Haizlip, a professional skateboarder and former drug user. He will speak to the students to discourage them from making some of the bad choices that he made during his life.

3. Dippin’ Dots! = To promote our theme that “Being Drug-Free is Sweet,” on Wednesday, October 27th Dippin’ Dots will be selling their very popular ice cream in the quad during lunch! The ice creams will sell for 3 dollars each.

4. Red Wrist Bands = The red wrist bands will be distributed to the students on Monday and if we spot the students wearing them on Wednesday they will get candy!

5. Wear Red Day! = Thursday, October 28th is the school-wide wear red day and whoever is sporting the drug-awareness color will get candy!

Have fun and stay drug free! =)

Battle of The Bay

This week a variety of sports activities have taken place, all of them in Newport's favor. Our first event was the amazing girl's Field Hockey on September 23rd. Our Newport girls ended up victorious against Santa Ana in a 3 - 0 win. After that, our boys Water Polo team left nothing but a wake of domination in their path as they beat teams from Santa Cruz and El Toro. Shortly after those games, our football team took the field in hopes of defeating Corona Del Mar. The Sailors came from behind in an amazing 4th quarter victory with a score of 20 to 17. :)

Welcome Back to School

So once again the halls of Newport Harbor are packed with students ready for another year. Instead of the beach we have books, and no more sleeping in either until Thanksgiving break. Despite the tragic depart of summer, many students are excited about being back in school. There are so many fun activities planned for this year; dances, games, and so much more. Freshmen are probably still a little lost; you will figure it out eventually. Sophomores, congratulations, you survived freshman year! Juniors, on the up side, your now upperclassmen and can go out to lunch, but remember this is one of the toughest years in high school. Seniors, you rule the school, have fun, your almost there!
