Getting a Job
Whether you are college bound or seeking full-time employment after high school, the need to work will send nearly everyone into the job-hunting market. Your first experience in the work-world may be either a part-time or full-time job. Below are some bits of information that will help you get started.
Finding a Job
- Check the Job Board in the Career Center.
- Look for “Help Wanted” signs in the places of business you visit. Check the Want Ads in the newspaper.
- Talk to everyone you know: family, friends, friends of the family, teachers, coaches, etc.
- Visit the Civil Service office to learn about openings for government jobs.
- Visit temporary agencies to experience a variety of jobs in different settings.
- Contact private employment agencies. Be sure to find out who pays the fees; some are paid by the employee (you) and some are paid by the employer.
- Check with the Youth Employment Center (YES) in Costa Mesa.
- Check local community college’s career centers.
Filling out an application
- Know your social security number.
- Know the names, addresses of: former employees and dates you were employed, of schools you have attended, and of people you wish to use as a reference (Be sure to ask their permission beforehand).
Dress for Success
- Whether you are going in to pick up or return an application, or you are scheduled for an interview, dress appropriately.
- First impressions last. Clothes and hairstyle should be conservative and appropriate for the type of work you are seeking. Don’t chew gum.
Interview Techniques
- Be on time.
- Look the employer directly in the eyes when speaking; be respectful and polite.
- Express enthusiasm for the position. Let him/her know how you can help the company.
- Be assertive. Ask when the final decision will be made. Call back to follow up on applications you submitted.
- Ask what the company is about in detail. Show interest in the organization.
Do Not Bring a Friend
- Employers are looking for maturity and independence.
