INCOMING SOPHOMORES HONORS ENGLISH ONLY
Two books are required:
• The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
• Plus, select at least one other novel to read from the incoming sophomores summer reading list. You must take and pass a reading test on at least one of the additional novels on the first day of class in September.
We urge you to read as many of the novels as possible because you can receive extra credit for doing so.
You are to read The Grapes of Wrath and select 12 quotes for a dialectical journal writing assignment. Please write the quotes in a spiral binder. The quote plus page number goes at the top of the page. You are to put your analysis underneath the quote. The responses should reflect your understanding of the novel in terms of the idea being discussed. It should be in paragraph form and a new page should be started for each quote.

Make sure that you select at least one quote to cover each area. The quotes must be selected from throughout the entire novel. Make sure not to concentrate on only one section.
The journal is due the first day of class. This journal is required for admittance into Sophomore Honors English.
We strongly recommend that all students keep notes on their reading.
Notes help students retain information and can be reviewed prior to the first week of school.
Students can take notes on characters, plot, settings and themes.
